SA Water and Global Water recently joined to create a sustainable and effective wastewater treatment system for a South Australian rural community.

The rural town of Amata on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankuntjatjara (APY) Lands, near the South Australia/Northern Territory border, has not experienced rainfall for over five years. This meant the landscape had remained dry and barren, with some children in the community having never seen ‘real’ green grass.
This all changed thanks to SA Water and Global Water’s innovative wastewater treatment system. The new purpose-built, wastewater treatment plant irrigates the local oval using recycled water and does so in an environmentally sustainable way.

The challenge was not only to effectively treat waste water for utilising in an irrigation system but also to install and commission such a system in an isolated location in the far North. Global Water had to ensure special durable materials were used for longevity of the plant as well as implementing remote monitoring technology to be able to constantly monitor the system.
Each day the system successfully treats 70,000 litres of wastewater - all pumped to an underground irrigation system at the recreational grounds, providing not only a magnificent green oasis for children, but a hub of activity for locals.
Global Water’s wastewater treatment solutions created a sustainable and effective model for long-term water supply. Although the system is self-sufficient, SA Water has introduced education sessions to the community to increase awareness of where drinking water comes from and the importance of water sustainability.
