EC Carpets: Rainwater Re-Use System
Since 2022, Global Water has partnered with EC Carpets, a sustainable carpet manufacturer, to design and install a rainwater re-use system. This tailored solution addresses their water efficiency goals by repurposing rainwater for irrigating their large industrial site. The project demonstrates how innovative water management can provide cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable results.
Project overview
Global Water worked with EC Carpets to design, supply, and install a comprehensive rainwater re-use system at their facility. The solution ensures efficient water treatment and distribution to support the irrigation requirements of their 150,000 sq ft premises.
THE CHALLENGE
EC Carpets sought to reduce its reliance on municipal water for irrigation and instead re-use rainwater that would otherwise flow into the stormwater network. The vast warehouse roof at their facility presented a significant opportunity to capture and repurpose the rainwater. However, the challenge lay in efficiently treating and distributing the captured water to meet their irrigation requirements.
THE SOLUTION
Global Water implemented a rainwater re-use system tailored to EC Carpets' needs that makes up the complete set-up. This consists of:
- Rainwater Capture: Rainwater is collected from the expansive warehouse roof, utilising the gutter and downpipe systems to maximise water capture efficiency.
- Storage Tanks: The harvested water is funnelled into high-capacity storage tanks, designed to optimise storage even in heavy downpours.
- E-Booster Rainwater Re-use System: The system features a dual Grundfos e-boost pressure booster pump setup running in duty/standby mode. This configuration ensures that one pump operates while the other remains on standby as a backup, enhancing reliability in case of failure. The pumps alternate roles regularly to balance the workload and extend their lifespan. The pump set-up is also complete with 2x 20" Filter Bag Vessels, 1-1/2" BSP In/Out with 10 µm and 5 µm filter bags to effectively remove sediment from the roof rainwater runoff.
The re-use system is configured to deliver 2 L/sec at 600 kPa, ensuring the irrigation system isn't overworked while meeting the irrigation needs of the 150,000 sq ft premises. This precise setup guarantees consistent performance and longevity of the equipment.
THE RESULTS
The installation of the rainwater re-use system has provided numerous benefits to EC Carpets:
- Water Conservation: By capturing and reusing rainwater, EC Carpets has reduced its dependence on municipal water, contributing to resource sustainability.
- Cost Savings: The system is a more cost-effective solution being that it has reduced the usage of municipal water.
- Environmental Impact: The project has lowered EC Carpets' environmental footprint by reducing stormwater runoff and conserving natural water resources.
Global Water’s collaboration with EC Carpets exemplifies how tailored water management solutions can drive sustainability and operational efficiency. By harnessing rainwater and utilising innovative pumping technology, EC Carpets has set a benchmark for environmentally conscious practices in their industry.
